At 1223 hours on Wednesday March 31st, Company 9 (Salem VFD), Engines 81 (Reynoldsville VFD), and 71 were alerted for a Structure Fire on Water Street in Salem. Engine 71 staffed with 4 personnel responded in 2 minutes. Engine 111 (Spelter VFD) was quickly added to the assignment. Engine 91 arrived on scene with a Working Fire in a 3-story dwelling with fire showing from the 3rd floor. Crews placed multiple hand lines in service and began an interior and exterior attack and secured a hydrant for water supply. Engine 71 arrived on scene as 3rd due and stretched a back up line to the fire floor to assist with interior attack. Upon knock down in the main fire room, crews realized that the fire had jumped floors into the first floor and the basement creating high heat and zero visibility. EVAC tones were struck due to rapidly deteriorating conditions leading up to a flashover on the basement and crews made basement access from 2 exterior access points including a door on the the B side to knock fire in the basement before reentering the structure and exposing fire in the walls and extinguishing the same. Fire suppression was hampered by balloon frame construction and Level 3 Hoarding Conditions. The fire was brought under control in under 90 minutes and a lengthy salvage and overhaul process began. After clean up, 71 returned home by 1518 hours. HCES was on scene for standby with no injuries reported. Photos courtesy of Co. 9, Co. 11, The Exponent Telegram, and WBOY.
