At 1201 hours on Wednesday July 20th, Company 9 (Salem Fire/EMS) and Squad 7 were alerted for a Vehicle Accident with Injuries and Entrapment on Route 50 WB near Dark Hollow Road outside of Salem. Squad 7 staffed with 6 personnel responded in 2 minutes. Engine 91 and Ambulance 910 arrived on scene to find one dually flat bed truck partially on its side, partially on its roof, and in the ditch with 1 occupant confirmed entrapped. HealthNet was placed in the air. Squad 7 arrived and placed the Rescue 42 struts for stabilization and placed Hurst tools from 91 and Squad 7 to remove remove the windshield, remove the drivers door, flap the roof, cut the center console and part of the dash, and used the large ram to make a “roof tent” to gain full access and free the patients lower extremities. Crews from Co. 9 and Squad 7 performed extrication while 910 performed patient care. HealthNet 1 landed at the accident scene to transport the patient to Ruby Memorial Hospital. With temperatures over 90 degrees and the heat index over 100, extrication time was completed in 45 minutes. After clean up, Squad 7 returned home at 1406 hours.
